Debate in Grand Rapids
For the past 17 years, one of our local country music radio stations has a free concert for their fans called B93 Birthday Bash. My friend Kristen & I ended up going one year, but it was so blessed hot and since there was no way you could get close to the stage (unless you arrived way earlier than we did) I ended up deciding on passing from then on.
Well, this year the concert was held last weekend (after a good size rainstorm had gone through the night before) at the Ionia Fairgrounds which is right next to the Grand River. (I bet you know where I’m going to be going here) Well, they had everyone park where they normally park and during the concert the river quickly rose to flood stages and there sat over 1000 car in the middle of all this water and due to the height of water there was no way they could get those cars out. (Some had water up to the windows!)
Now this is where the debate starts. People who’s cars were submerged feels that the radio station should have to pay for all the damages since they were told to park there and knew there was a chance it could flood, while B93 says that people just need to contact their own car insurance companies.
On this debate I do have to go with the Radio Station. The concert goers say that the radio station should of known that it was going to flood due to the rain, well shouldn’t the concert goers of known better too? It was their choice to go to this concert. It’s not as if they were going to be out any money if they didn’t go since the tickets were FREE. To me it would be no different going to a store during a tornado watch/warning, having a tornado come and then blaming it on the store because my car got damaged.
Just another example of people trying to pass the buck in hopes of getting some money or a new car.

You should also mention that as soon as the river started rising they made repeated announcements that folks should move their cars out of that lot… I understand that not everyone could get there in time, but there were a lot of people who just didn’t think anything would actually happen. I was not there, but this information comes from a very good friend of mine who WAS at the event, and did hear the announcements made for people to move their cars…
